Wearable technology is evolving beyond fitness trackers and smartwatches, and Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses are helping define the next generation of AI-powered wearables. Combining iconic Ray-Ban style with AI, voice assistance, cameras, audio, and display capabilities, these glasses are designed to make daily tasks easier without constantly reaching for a smartphone. Having recently explored the Meta Ray-Ban Display platform, I wanted to see how far these capabilities could be extended through custom application experiences.
Smarter Everyday Experiences
The biggest advantage of Meta Ray-Ban glasses is their ability to provide hands-free assistance. Whether you’re walking through a new city, shopping, traveling, or commuting, you can simply ask Meta AI questions about what you’re seeing, get quick answers, translate signs, or receive contextual information in real time.
The glasses also allow users to:
- Capture photos and videos from a first-person perspective
- Make calls and send messages without touching a phone
- Listen to music and navigation instructions through open-ear speakers
- Translate conversations and text while traveling
- Stay connected while remaining present in the moment

My Experience: Building a Virtual Shopping App on Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses
First-Time Setup
The Meta Wearables Device Access Toolkit provides access to the display capabilities of Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses. Using familiar mobile development patterns in Swift or Kotlin, developers can build component-based UI layouts while the SDK automatically handles rendering on the glasses. In addition to display support, the platform also provides access to device capabilities such as the camera, microphone, and speakers, enabling richer and more immersive experiences.
- Pair the glasses with an iPhone through the Meta app.
- Integrate the Meta Wearables Display Toolkit.
- Establish a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection.
- Validate display rendering and interaction events.
How It Works:
- Session-Based Communication: The mobile app creates a display session and connects to the glasses over Bluetooth. Users explicitly start the session, and the app gains display control for the duration of that interaction.
- UI Rendering on Glasses: Instead of streaming an entire screen, the app builds lightweight component-based layouts that are serialized by the SDK and rendered directly on the glasses.
- Real-Time Interactions: User actions such as taps, selections, and navigation events are sent back to the mobile application, enabling responsive and interactive experiences.
- Smart Session Management: Sessions can be ended by the user or application logic and may be temporarily interrupted by higher-priority events such as incoming calls or notifications.
Shopping Experience
As part of my exploration of the Meta Ray-Ban Display platform, I built a virtual shopping application that demonstrates how lightweight, hands-free experiences can be delivered directly through smart glasses. The application allows users to browse categories such as Electronics and Fashion, compare products using images, pricing, and key details, and explore detailed product information through a lightweight display experience.
Users can navigate image galleries, adjust quantities, and proceed to checkout through a hands-free interface displayed on the glasses. The result is a seamless shopping journey that minimizes reliance on a smartphone while keeping relevant information directly within the user’s field of view.

The glasses can act as a personal travel companion by providing navigation guidance, translating signs and menus, and displaying information about nearby landmarks, helping users explore new places hands-free. - Remote Expert Support

The display can provide step-by-step instructions, training guides, and visual prompts directly in the user’s view, making onboarding and skill learning more interactive and efficient. - Fitness Companion
The glasses can display workout stats, pace updates, route guidance, and coaching prompts, allowing users to stay focused on their activity without checking a phone or smartwatch.

While challenges such as battery life, privacy concerns, and ecosystem maturity remain, the technology is already demonstrating how everyday tasks can become simpler, faster, and more immersive. The virtual shopping prototype is just one example of how Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses can enable immersive experiences across shopping, travel, training, fitness, and collaboration. As AI and wearable computing continue to evolve, smart glasses have the potential to become a natural extension of our everyday digital lives.
